Instagram video lengths
Instagram has developed its video capabilities in different features. There are different lengths for Reels, feed posts, Stories, and Lives.
Instagram Reels Video Length: Up to 90 seconds.
Instagram Feed Video Length: Between 3 seconds and 1 minute long.
Instagram Story Video Length: Up to 15 seconds per Story, can post 4x Stories at a time, up to 60 seconds.
Instagram Live Video Length: Up to 4 hours long.
Instagram Video Size Requirements
As with any social media platform, Instagram videos have specific size requirements to ensure the videos uploaded are as high quality as possible. For Instagram, the video size requirements include more than dimensions and cover aspect ratios and maximum file size.
When using Instagram casually, it’s not necessary to fully understand Instagram’s video requirements, but if you want to increase Instagram growth and Instagram engagement, it’s a good idea to understand how to make your content work best for the platform. Understanding Instagram video size requirements will make your content more appealing to other Instagrammers.
The Instagram Reels video size requirements are:
1080 pixels X 1920 pixels
This is the standard size for most videos on the platform, so you shouldn’t have any trouble creating one that fits these dimensions.
Pro Tip: Reels can now be up to 90 seconds in length. Conduct research on a length that best suits your audience and work with this to increase engagement.
In-Feed video size requirements are:
1080 pixels X 1080 pixels (landscape)
1080 pixels X 1350 pixels (portrait)
You can opt to use 1080 X 608, however it may be cut off or shortened. For polished-looking content, we advise sticking with those sizes mentioned above.
Stories size requirements are:
1080 pixels X 608 pixels (min.)
1080 pixels X 1920 pixels (max.)
Stories and Reels pretty much share the same size requirements. If you know how to shoot Reels in-app, then you’ll know how to make professional-looking Stories. Check out our blog for Story ideas this summer!
The size requirements for Lives are:
1080 pixels X 1920 pixels
While this is the same as Reels and Stories, the duration of Lives is much longer. Keep in mind that Lives can only be recorded through the camera app.
Pro Tip: before going Live, check your internet connection. A general rule of thumb is that anything above 500 kbps means you’re good to go.
Instagram video Aspect Ratios
The aspect ratio of a video is always the width in relation to the height. The first digit represents the width, and the second digit represents the height.
Staying within your respective Instagram ratios is crucial if you don’t want your content to be cut off.
Instagram Feed Video Size
The aspect ratio for in-Feed videos is: 4:5 (although 1.91:1 and 9:16 are supported too).
You can also upload in-Feed videos in a square format using a 1:1 aspect ratio.
Pro Tip: the majority of Instagram users access the platform through a mobile device. Instagram videos in vertical or portrait mode show up better on these devices.
The aspect ratio for Instagram Reels is: 9:16.
Instagram Story videos
The aspect ratio for Instagram Stories is: 9:16.
Like Reels and Lives, Stories perform best when shot in vertical/portrait mode.
Instagram LIVE Video Size
The aspect ratio for Live videos is: 9:16.
The aspect ratio for Live videos is automatically set within the app.
Instagram Video Size Limits
The Instagram video size limit for Reels is: 4GB (for 60 seconds of video).
We advise staying below 15MB to reduce upload time.
The Instagram video size limit for in-Feed videos is: 650MB (for videos 10 mins or less) or 3.6GB (for 60 min videos).
The Instagram video size limit for Stories is: 4GB (for every 15 seconds of video).
Remember, if your Story is more than 15 seconds long, Instagram will split it up into sections.
The Instagram video size limit for Live videos is: 4GB (for every 4 hours of video).
This is an update from the platform’s previous 60 minute limit. Be sure to keep checking your clock when on Live though, so that you don’t exceed the time limit!
